Tragically, three people were killed in a wrong-way car crash in the early hours of December 2. The accident occurred on Interstate 88 in Naperville. According to this Chicago Tribune article, a driver in one vehicle, a man from Elgin, lost control of his vehicle and collided with a car driven by an Uber driver from Aurora with one passenger, who was from Naperville. All three died at the scene from traumatic injuries. Police still do not have an explanation as to why the driver was driving the wrong direction on the expressway.
Wrong way car crashes are one of the most serious and deadly types of car crashes on U.S. roads. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) says on average, 360 lives are lost each year in about 260 accidents caused by wrong-way collisions. In many of these cases, alcohol impairment played a role in the wrong way crash. Countermeasures include creating better ways to mark and design highway entrance and exit ramps. Experts also advise establishing monitoring and intervention methods with alerts to stop wrong-way accidents, including in-vehicle support systems.
